Porcelain Veneers in Istanbul
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made ceramic shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their shape, colour and proportion. When planned conservatively, they require far less tooth reduction than crowns and can produce a natural, light-reflecting result.

What is Porcelain Veneers?
A veneer covers the visible front surface and biting edge of a tooth. Porcelain, often lithium disilicate or feldspathic ceramic, is translucent and stain-resistant, which helps veneers mimic natural enamel. They are commonly used to correct discolouration that does not respond to whitening, chips, worn edges, small gaps and mild irregularities in shape.
Veneers are different from crowns. A crown encases the whole tooth and requires removal of considerably more structure, whereas a veneer bonds mainly to enamel and can often be placed with minimal preparation, sometimes only fractions of a millimetre. Staying within enamel gives the strongest bond and helps protect the tooth's nerve. Over-preparation, or using crowns where veneers would suffice, is one of the main causes of the problems associated with aggressive cosmetic dentistry abroad.

- Chipped, worn, slightly uneven or small-looking front teeth
- Minor gaps where orthodontic treatment is not preferred
- Patients without severe untreated grinding, or willing to wear a night guard
- Women with realistic expectations about shade and natural appearance

- Chips and worn biting edges
- Small gaps between front teeth
- Uneven tooth length or shape
- Mild rotation or irregularity in suitable cases
Consultation & assessment
In an online assessment, you share smile photographs and any recent X-rays confidentially. The dentist can advise whether veneers are likely to be appropriate, whether whitening or bonding might be a better first step, and how many teeth may be involved.
In Istanbul, an in-person examination with radiographs confirms gum health, enamel thickness, bite and any grinding before treatment is agreed. A digital design or mock-up allows you to preview the proposed shape. Preparation depth is guided by this design so that only the minimum tooth structure needed is removed.
How the procedure is performed
At the first appointment, the teeth are lightly prepared under local anaesthesia where necessary, guided by the agreed mock-up. A digital scan or impression is taken and the shade is selected, ideally in natural light. Temporary veneers may be placed while the laboratory makes the final porcelain.
At the fitting appointment, each veneer is tried in to check fit, colour and shape. The tooth surface is then cleaned and conditioned, and the veneer is bonded with resin cement and light-cured. Excess cement is removed and your bite is checked and adjusted.
Anaesthesia
Local anaesthesia is usually used during preparation for comfort. For truly no-preparation or minimal-preparation veneers, anaesthesia may not be required. You remain fully awake throughout.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–2
Mild sensitivity and gum tenderness after preparation; temporaries may feel slightly rough.
Days 3–7
Final veneers are fitted and the bite adjusted. Speech usually adapts within days.
Weeks 1–2
Gums settle around the margins and sensitivity typically fades.
1–3 months
Review with your local dentist to check bite, margins and gum health.
Ongoing
Regular hygiene visits and a night guard where advised help protect the porcelain.
What to expect during the first week
- Expect some temperature sensitivity, especially after preparation
- Avoid biting into very hard foods with the front teeth
- Clean gently but thoroughly at the gumline
- Tell your dentist if the bite feels high or uneven
- Avoid strongly staining foods and drinks around the fitting appointment
When can I fly?
Flying is generally fine soon after veneers are fitted. It is sensible to fly after your final bite check so that any adjustments can be made before you leave.
When can I return to work?
Most women return to work the next day. Temporary numbness after preparation usually wears off within a few hours.
When can I exercise?
Exercise is usually unrestricted. If you play contact sports, a custom mouthguard is advisable to protect the veneers.
Appearance & aesthetics
Veneers leave no scars. Well-fitted margins should sit harmoniously with the gumline.
Results
Well-designed veneers should look natural, with appropriate translucency and proportion rather than an opaque, uniform white. Consented before and after photographs of similar cases can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?
Porcelain veneers can last many years with good care, but they are not permanent and may eventually need replacing. Because enamel has been altered, the teeth will usually always need some form of covering.
Potential risks and complications
- Irreversible removal of enamel, even with minimal preparation
- Tooth sensitivity, usually temporary but occasionally persistent
- Chipping, cracking or debonding of the porcelain
- Nerve inflammation requiring root canal treatment, more likely with deeper preparation
- Gum inflammation or recession exposing the veneer margin
- Shade or shape not matching expectations
- Increased risk of fracture in patients who grind their teeth
- Need for future replacement and associated costs
Choosing a surgeon
- Confirm the dentist is licensed and registered with the Turkish Dental Association (Türk Dişhekimleri Birliği), and ask about postgraduate training in prosthodontics, restorative or implant dentistry
- Ask how much tooth structure will be removed, why, and what more conservative alternatives were considered
- Review consented before and after photographs of similar cases during consultation, remembering that results vary between individuals
- Request a written treatment plan listing each tooth, the material, the laboratory used and the expected number of appointments
- Make sure there is a clear aftercare and follow-up plan, including what happens if a restoration chips or debonds after you return home

Porcelain Veneers: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between veneers and crowns?
Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth and need much less preparation. Crowns cover the whole tooth and require more reduction, so they are usually reserved for teeth that are heavily restored or weakened.
Are veneers the same as 'Turkey teeth'?
Not when planned conservatively. The term usually refers to healthy teeth heavily reduced for full crowns. Minimal-preparation porcelain veneers aim to preserve enamel and look natural.
How long should I stay in Istanbul?
Usually around 5–8 days, depending on the number of veneers and whether any preliminary treatment is needed.
When can I fly home?
Typically after your final bite check, often the day after fitting.
How much do veneers cost in Turkey?
Cost depends on the number of veneers, material, laboratory, preliminary treatment and accommodation. A personalised written quote follows assessment.
Can I see before and after photos?
Consented before and after photographs of similar cases are reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.
Can veneers be removed later?
Veneers can be replaced, but because enamel has been altered, the teeth will usually always need a covering. This is why careful case selection matters.
