Dental Implants in Istanbul

A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconia post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth, later supporting a crown, bridge or denture. Because the implant must integrate with the bone before final teeth are fitted, treatment usually takes place over two visits several months apart.

What is Dental Implants?

Implants replace the root of a missing tooth, providing a fixed foundation that does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, unlike a conventional bridge. A connecting piece, the abutment, joins the implant to a custom crown. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or support a full-arch restoration.

The key biological step is osseointegration, the process by which bone grows into close contact with the implant surface. This often takes a few months, and longer if bone grafting is needed. Rushing this stage can compromise the result, which is why most international patients plan one visit for implant placement and a second for the final crown. Immediate loading with temporary teeth is possible in carefully selected cases only.

Who may be suitable?

  • Adults with one or more missing teeth and good general health
  • Adequate jawbone volume, or suitability for bone grafting
  • Healthy gums, with any gum disease treated beforehand
  • Non-smokers or those willing to stop, as smoking increases the risk of implant failure
  • Well-controlled medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Willingness to commit to two visits and long-term maintenance

What can this procedure address?

  • A single missing tooth
  • Several missing teeth
  • Loose or uncomfortable dentures
  • Bone loss and changes in facial support after tooth loss
  • Avoiding preparation of healthy neighbouring teeth for a bridge

Consultation & assessment

An online assessment begins with your dental history, current X-rays if available and photographs, sent confidentially. The dentist can give a preliminary view of whether implants are likely to be suitable and whether grafting might be needed.

In Istanbul, a full examination with a 3D cone-beam CT scan assesses bone volume and the position of nerves and sinuses before surgery is confirmed. Your medical history and medications, particularly blood thinners and bone medications, are reviewed. Treatment is planned by a qualified implant dentist, oral surgeon or prosthodontist.

How the procedure is performed

At the first visit, the gum is opened under local anaesthesia and a precise channel is prepared in the bone for the implant. Guided surgery using a digitally planned template may be used. Bone grafting or a sinus lift may be performed at the same time or in advance if bone is insufficient.

The implant is then left to integrate with the bone, typically for a few months. A temporary tooth may be provided for appearance where appropriate.

At the second visit, integration is checked, an abutment is attached and a scan is taken for the final crown, which is fitted and adjusted to your bite over several days.

Anaesthesia

Implant placement is usually carried out under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area completely while you remain awake. Conscious sedation may be offered for anxious patients or more extensive procedures.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1–3

Swelling, mild bruising and tenderness are common. Soft foods and prescribed pain relief help.

  2. Week 1

Swelling subsides and stitches may be removed or dissolve. Gentle cleaning around the site continues.

  3. Weeks 2–4

Gum tissue heals while the implant begins integrating with bone.

  4. 3–6 months

Osseointegration continues; longer if grafting was required. You return to Istanbul for the final crown.

  5. Second visit

Abutment and final crown fitted, bite adjusted.

  6. Ongoing

Regular reviews and meticulous hygiene protect the implant and surrounding gum and bone.

What to expect during the first week

  • Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling in the first 24–48 hours
  • Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the implant side
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, which impair healing
  • Rinse gently as instructed, avoiding vigorous rinsing on the first day
  • Take antibiotics or pain relief only as prescribed
  • Report increasing pain, swelling, fever or bleeding promptly

When can I fly?

Many patients can fly a few days after implant placement, once bleeding has settled. If a sinus lift was performed, your dentist may advise a longer interval because pressure changes can affect healing. Follow individual advice.

When can I return to work?

Many women return to desk-based work within 1–3 days, depending on the extent of surgery and swelling.

When can I exercise?

Avoid strenuous exercise for several days after implant surgery, as increased blood pressure can provoke bleeding and swelling. Light walking is fine.

Appearance & aesthetics

Incisions are inside the mouth and heal within a few weeks. There are no visible external scars.

Results

A well-integrated implant with a carefully made crown can look and function much like a natural tooth. Consented before and after photographs of similar cases can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?

Implants can last many years and often a long time with good care, though the crown may need replacing over time. Gum disease around implants (peri-implantitis), smoking and poor hygiene are the main threats to longevity.

Potential risks and complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.

  • Infection at the implant site
  • Failure of the implant to integrate with the bone
  • Nerve injury causing numbness or tingling of the lip, chin or tongue
  • Sinus complications with upper back implants
  • Bleeding, swelling and bruising
  • Peri-implantitis, inflammation leading to bone loss around the implant
  • Damage to neighbouring teeth or roots
  • Mechanical problems such as screw loosening or crown fracture
  • Gum recession affecting the appearance of the implant crown

Choosing a surgeon

  • Confirm the dentist is licensed and registered with the Turkish Dental Association, with postgraduate training in implant dentistry, oral surgery or prosthodontics
  • Ask whether a 3D scan will be taken and how nerve and sinus positions are assessed
  • Ask which implant system is used and request documentation of the brand and components for your records
  • Review consented before and after photographs of similar cases, remembering that results vary between individuals
  • Make sure the healing period is respected and a clear plan exists for follow-up between visits and after you return home

Dental Implants in Istanbul

Implant treatment usually involves two visits. The first, for assessment and placement, often lasts around 5–7 days. After a healing period of a few months, a second visit of a similar length allows the final crown to be fitted and adjusted.

Women travel to Istanbul for implants because the city has experienced implant dentists and oral surgeons, modern imaging and established laboratories. We coordinate with selected dental clinics in Istanbul and encourage plans that respect biological healing times rather than compressed schedules.

The cost of dental implants in Turkey depends on the number of implants, implant system, need for bone grafting or sinus lift, type of final restoration, imaging, sedation, number of visits and accommodation. A personalised written quote follows assessment. Choose your dentist based on clinical quality, not price alone.

Costs depend on your surgeon, hospital, anaesthesia, complexity and any combined procedures — see treatment costs in Turkey.

Dental Implants: frequently asked questions

Why do implants need two visits?

The implant needs time to bond with the jawbone, a process called osseointegration, which often takes a few months. The final crown is fitted once integration is confirmed.

How long should I stay in Istanbul?

Usually around 5–7 days for each of the two visits, depending on the number of implants and whether grafting is required.

When can I fly home?

Often a few days after placement, once bleeding has settled. After a sinus lift, a longer interval may be advised.

How much do dental implants cost in Turkey?

Cost depends on the number of implants, implant system, grafting, type of crown, imaging, sedation and the number of visits. A personalised written quote follows assessment.

Is implant surgery painful?

Local anaesthesia numbs the area during the procedure. Afterwards, some soreness and swelling are common for a few days and are usually managed with prescribed pain relief.

Can I see before and after results?

Consented before and after photographs of comparable cases are reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

Can I get teeth in one day?

Immediate temporary teeth are possible in carefully selected cases with good bone quality. Many patients are better served by allowing the implant to heal first.
