What is Smile Makeover?
A smile makeover is not a single procedure but a coordinated treatment plan. Depending on your teeth and goals, it might include professional whitening, composite bonding, minimal-preparation porcelain veneers, replacement of old restorations, crowns on genuinely weakened teeth, gum contouring or dental implants for missing teeth. In some cases, orthodontic alignment beforehand allows much less tooth reduction later.
Digital smile design uses photographs, video, intraoral scans and software to analyse facial proportions, lip movement and tooth dimensions. A diagnostic wax-up or a temporary trial smile (mock-up) placed over your own teeth lets you preview the proposed shape before anything is permanent. This helps you and your dentist agree on a natural, proportionate design and avoid oversized or overly white teeth that can look artificial.
Who may be suitable?
- Women with good general and gum health, or who are willing to treat gum disease first
- Those with several aesthetic concerns, such as discolouration, chips, gaps or worn edges
- Patients who want a natural-looking result rather than a uniform, very white smile
- Women who are prepared to maintain excellent oral hygiene and attend regular check-ups
- Those who understand that restorations need maintenance and may need replacing over time
- Patients without uncontrolled teeth grinding, or who will wear a protective night guard
What can this treatment address?
- Uneven tooth length, shape or proportion
- Stained or discoloured teeth and mismatched old restorations
- Small gaps, chips and worn edges
- Missing teeth affecting the appearance of the smile
- An uneven gumline that makes teeth appear short
Consultation & assessment
Your journey usually starts with an online assessment. You send clear smile photographs, any recent dental X-rays and a summary of your dental history confidentially, and an independent dentist gives a preliminary view of possible options, including more conservative alternatives, and an estimate of the number of visits.
In Istanbul, a full in-person examination is carried out before any treatment is confirmed. This typically includes a clinical check of teeth and gums, radiographs or a 3D scan, bite assessment and digital smile design. Any decay or gum disease is treated first. You should see and approve the proposed design, ideally with a trial mock-up, before teeth are prepared.
How the procedure is performed
Treatment is sequenced so that foundations come first: hygiene and gum care, fillings or root treatment if required, then whitening so that new restorations can be matched to your lighter natural shade. Only then are veneers, crowns or bonding planned and colour-matched.
For veneers and crowns, the teeth are prepared under local anaesthesia according to the agreed design, scanned or impressed, and temporaries are placed while a dental laboratory makes the final restorations. A try-in allows the fit, shade and shape to be checked before permanent cementation. Your bite is then refined so the teeth meet evenly.
If implants are part of the plan, they are placed in an earlier visit and allowed to heal before final teeth are fitted, which usually means a second trip several months later.
Anaesthesia
Most smile makeover appointments are carried out under local anaesthesia, which numbs the treated area while you remain awake. Whitening and bonding often need no anaesthesia at all. Sedation may be available for anxious patients or longer sessions, and your dentist will discuss this with you.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Mild tenderness of gums and some sensitivity to hot and cold are common after preparation. Temporaries may feel slightly bulky.
Days 4–7
Try-in and fitting of final restorations, followed by bite adjustment. Speech and chewing usually adapt within days.
Weeks 1–2
Sensitivity normally settles. Your gums adapt around the new restorations.
1–3 months
A check-up with your local dentist is advisable to review the bite and gum health.
3–6 months
If implants are included, healing and integration continue before final teeth are placed on a second visit.
Ongoing
Regular hygiene visits, a night guard if advised and careful home care help restorations last.
What to expect during the first week
- Expect some sensitivity to temperature after teeth are prepared
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods while temporaries are in place
- Keep cleaning carefully around the gums with a soft brush
- Report any persistent pain, a high bite or loose temporaries to your dentist
- Allow time for speech to adjust to new tooth shapes
When can I fly?
Flying is generally fine soon after cosmetic dental treatment, as most procedures are not surgical. If extractions or implant surgery are part of the plan, your dentist may advise waiting a day or two. Plan your flight after the final bite check rather than on the same day as cementation.
When can I return to work?
Most women return to work the next day. Some prefer a day off after longer preparation appointments because of numbness or mild discomfort.
When can I exercise?
Exercise is usually unrestricted after whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns. If extractions or implant surgery are involved, avoid strenuous exercise for a few days as advised.
Appearance & aesthetics
There are no visible scars. If gum contouring or implant surgery is included, the gums heal within a few weeks.
Results
A well-planned smile makeover should look natural and proportionate to your face, with restorations that match one another and your remaining teeth. Consented before and after photographs of similar cases can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?
Porcelain restorations can last many years with good care, but none are permanent. Composite bonding typically needs polishing or repair sooner. Grinding, gum recession and decay can shorten the lifespan of any restoration, so regular dental reviews are essential.
Potential risks and complications
- Tooth sensitivity after preparation, which may persist in some cases
- Irreversible loss of enamel when teeth are prepared
- Inflammation of the dental nerve, sometimes needing root canal treatment, particularly with more aggressive preparation
- Gum irritation or recession around restorations
- Chipping, fracture or debonding of veneers, crowns or bonding
- Shade or shape that does not meet expectations, which is why a trial mock-up matters
- Bite problems or jaw discomfort if the bite is altered
- Need for future replacement and ongoing maintenance costs
- Implant-related risks where implants are included, such as infection or failure to integrate
Choosing a surgeon
- Confirm the dentist is licensed and registered with the Turkish Dental Association (Türk Dişhekimleri Birliği), and ask about postgraduate training in prosthodontics, restorative or implant dentistry
- Ask how much tooth structure will be removed, why, and what more conservative alternatives were considered
- Review consented before and after photographs of similar cases during consultation, remembering that results vary between individuals
- Request a written treatment plan listing each tooth, the material, the laboratory used and the expected number of appointments
- Make sure there is a clear aftercare and follow-up plan, including what happens if a restoration chips or debonds after you return home
Smile Makeover in Istanbul
For whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns, a stay of around 7–10 days is typical, allowing for examination, preparation, laboratory time, try-in and a final bite check. Plans including implants usually need two visits, separated by a healing period of a few months.
Women travel to Istanbul for smile design because the city has experienced dentists and prosthodontists, modern digital equipment and established dental laboratories. Our role is to coordinate a considered, conservative plan with selected dental clinics, not to sell volume.
The cost of a smile makeover in Turkey depends on the number of teeth treated, materials, laboratory work, any preliminary treatment, imaging and the number of visits, as well as accommodation. A personalised written quote follows assessment. Choose your dentist based on clinical quality, not price alone.

Smile Makeover: frequently asked questions
What is digital smile design?
It is a planning process using photographs, video and scans to design tooth shape and proportion in relation to your face. A trial mock-up can let you preview the design on your own teeth before anything is permanent.
Will my healthy teeth be filed down?
Not unnecessarily. A conservative plan uses whitening, bonding or minimal-preparation veneers where suitable and reserves crowns for teeth that genuinely need them. Always ask how much tooth will be removed and why.
How long should I stay in Istanbul?
Typically 7–10 days for veneers, crowns or bonding, depending on the number of teeth. If implants are included, two visits separated by a few months of healing are usually needed.
When can I fly home?
Usually the day after your final bite check. If implant surgery or extractions were performed, your dentist may suggest waiting a day or two.
How much does a smile makeover cost in Turkey?
Cost depends on the number of teeth, materials, laboratory work, preliminary treatment, imaging and visits needed. A personalised written quote follows assessment.
Can I see before and after results?
Consented before and after photographs of comparable cases are reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals, and a mock-up is a more reliable preview of your own outcome.
Will it look natural?
A natural result depends on careful design, appropriate shade selection and proportion to your face. Very white or oversized teeth tend to look artificial, so these are discussed openly during planning.
