Body Contouring

Thigh Lift in Istanbul

A thigh lift, or thighplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the thighs, most commonly the inner thighs, to improve contour and comfort. It is often considered after significant weight loss, when loose skin causes chafing or difficulty with clothing. Results vary between individuals.

What is Thigh Lift?

Thighplasty removes loose skin that liposuction alone cannot tighten. A medial or inner thigh lift is the most common type: a limited version uses an incision in the groin crease, while an extended version adds a vertical incision along the inner thigh towards the knee when laxity is more significant. Outer thigh lifts are usually performed as part of a lower body lift.

Liposuction is often combined to remove residual fat. Thigh lift is particularly relevant after bariatric surgery or major weight loss, and surgeons usually recommend that your weight has been stable for several months beforehand. The trade-off is a permanent scar, so careful discussion of scar position is essential.

Who may be suitable?

  • You have loose or hanging skin on the inner or outer thighs
  • Your weight has been stable for several months, including after bariatric surgery
  • Your BMI is within a range your surgeon considers safe
  • You are a non-smoker or willing to stop for the advised period
  • You are in good health with adequate nutrition after weight loss
  • You accept permanent scarring in exchange for improved contour

What can this procedure address?

  • Loose inner thigh skin after weight loss
  • Chafing, irritation or skin infections between the thighs
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit comfortably
  • Sagging skin with reduced elasticity due to ageing
  • Residual fat combined with skin laxity

Consultation & assessment

You can start with an online assessment, sending photos confidentially along with details of your weight history, any bariatric surgery and medical conditions. A surgeon can indicate whether a limited or extended thigh lift is likely to be appropriate.

An in-person examination in Istanbul confirms the plan. Your surgeon will assess skin excess and quality, discuss scar placement and length, review nutritional status and blood tests, and explain wound care and thrombosis prevention.

How the procedure is performed

For a limited inner thigh lift, an incision is made in the groin crease and excess skin is removed, with the deeper tissue anchored to firm structures to reduce scar migration. For an extended thigh lift, a vertical incision along the inner thigh allows more skin to be removed.

Liposuction may be used first to reduce fat and assist skin removal. The wounds are closed in layers, drains may be placed and compression garments are applied.

Anaesthesia

A thigh lift is performed under general anaesthesia by an anaesthesiologist. Thrombosis prevention is planned in advance, particularly as early leg movement may be uncomfortable.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1–3

You stay in hospital, with swelling and tightness in the thighs. You will walk gently with assistance and wear compression.

  2. Week 1

Mobility improves. Wounds are checked carefully, as the groin area can be prone to moisture and wound separation.

  3. Weeks 2–3

Desk-based work is often possible. Avoid wide leg movements and straining the incisions.

  4. Week 6

Most activities resume with your surgeon's approval. Compression may continue.

  5. 3–6 months

Swelling, which can persist in the lower legs, gradually resolves. Scars begin to soften.

  6. 12 months

Scars mature and the final result is visible. Results vary between individuals.

What to expect during the first week

  • Walk short distances regularly while avoiding wide steps
  • Keep wounds clean and dry, following hygiene advice for the groin area
  • Wear compression garments as instructed
  • Raise your legs when resting to help reduce swelling
  • Take anticoagulant medication as prescribed

When can I fly?

Most surgeons advise staying around 10–14 days before a long-haul flight after a thigh lift. Leg surgery increases the importance of thrombosis prevention: wear compression, walk regularly, keep hydrated and follow anticoagulant instructions.

When can I return to work?

Desk-based work is usually possible after 2–3 weeks. Jobs involving walking, standing or physical effort may require 4–6 weeks.

When can I exercise?

Gentle walking starts immediately. Light activity may resume after 3–4 weeks, with strenuous exercise, cycling and wide leg movements typically delayed until 6 weeks or later.

Scars

Scars are permanent and depend on the technique: a groin crease scar for a limited lift and an additional inner thigh scar for an extended lift. They usually fade over 12–18 months, but may widen or migrate slightly.

Results

Smoother, firmer thigh contour and reduced chafing are the usual goals. Consented before and after photographs can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?

Results are long-lasting with stable weight, although some skin relaxation with ageing is normal.

Potential risks and complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.

  • Wound separation, particularly in the groin area
  • Seroma and haematoma
  • Infection
  • Scar widening, migration or visible scarring
  • Prolonged swelling of the lower legs (lymphoedema)
  • Numbness or altered sensation
  • Distortion of the labia if the scar pulls downward
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (VTE)
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularity

Choosing a surgeon

  • Confirm specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery
  • Verify registration with the Turkish Medical Association and relevant societies
  • Ask about experience with post-weight-loss body contouring and thighplasty techniques
  • Review consented before and after photographs, including scars
  • Confirm hospital privileges and a detailed wound care plan

Thigh Lift: frequently asked questions

How long should I stay in Istanbul?

Typically 10–14 days, so that wounds can be reviewed before you travel.

When can I fly home after a thigh lift?

Usually after 10–14 days, with compression, regular walking and hydration during the flight.

How much does a thigh lift cost in Turkey?

Cost depends on the surgeon, hospital, anaesthesia, extent of the lift, combined procedures, hospital stay and accommodation. A written quote follows assessment. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone.

Can liposuction alone treat my inner thighs?

If your skin has good elasticity, liposuction may be enough. Where skin is loose, removing fat alone can make laxity more noticeable, so a thigh lift may be recommended.

Where will my scars be?

In the groin crease for a limited lift, with an additional scar along the inner thigh for an extended lift. Your surgeon will mark the planned position with you.

What results can I expect and can I see before and after photos?

Firmer, smoother thighs with permanent scars. Consented before and after photographs are reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.
