What a mommy makeover is
Mommy makeover is not a single operation but a term for a personalised combination of procedures that address changes many women notice after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin and muscles, alter breast volume and position, and change how fat is distributed. For some women these changes persist despite exercise and a stable weight.
The combination is planned around each woman's concerns and anatomy. Two women may both describe their surgery as a mommy makeover yet have quite different operations. That is why the plan should come from an individual assessment rather than a fixed package.
- Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), often with repair of separated abdominal muscles
- Breast augmentation, breast lift, lift with implants or breast reduction
- Liposuction of areas such as the flanks, back or thighs
- In some cases, intimate procedures such as labiaplasty or perineoplasty, usually planned separately with an appropriate specialist
Diastasis recti and the abdomen
During pregnancy, the two vertical bands of the rectus abdominis muscle can separate as the abdomen expands, a condition called diastasis recti. In many women, the gap narrows in the months after birth, particularly with guided exercise. When significant separation persists, it can contribute to a rounded abdomen that does not respond to exercise, and sometimes to back discomfort.
During a tummy tuck, the surgeon can repair the separated muscles with sutures, remove loose skin and tighten the abdominal wall. Postnatal physiotherapy is still valuable before surgery, and an assessment may also look for an umbilical or other hernia, which can sometimes be repaired at the same time.
When to consider surgery
Timing has a significant effect on both safety and the durability of results. Many surgeons recommend waiting until you have completed your family, as a future pregnancy can stretch the abdominal repair and change the breasts again. It is also commonly advised to wait several months after stopping breastfeeding, so that breast size has stabilised, and until your weight has been stable for some time.
Being in good general health matters. Smoking and nicotine use significantly increase the risk of wound healing problems after a tummy tuck and breast lift, so surgeons usually ask patients to stop well before and after surgery. Conditions such as anaemia, diabetes or a history of blood clots should be discussed openly during assessment.
Combined or staged surgery: safety considerations
Performing several procedures in a single operation means one anaesthetic and one main recovery period, which many women find practical. However, longer operations and combined procedures carry a higher overall risk, including of blood clots, and the recovery is more demanding. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will consider your health, body mass index and the expected length of surgery when deciding whether to combine or stage the procedures.
Staging, for example breast surgery first and a tummy tuck some months later, can be the more appropriate choice for some women. It reduces the length of each operation and can make each recovery easier, at the cost of two anaesthetics and two recovery periods. There is no single right answer; the decision should be based on safety for you individually.
Recovery and recognised risks
Recovery after a combined mommy makeover is more involved than after a single procedure. A hospital stay of one to two nights is common. Walking in a slightly bent position is often needed for the first days after a tummy tuck, while arm movements are limited after breast surgery. Compression garments, a surgical bra and measures to reduce clot risk, such as early walking, compression stockings and sometimes blood-thinning injections, are typically used. Many women need around two to three weeks before returning to desk work, and strenuous exercise is usually delayed for six weeks or more.
Every combined operation carries the recognised risks of each procedure it includes, as well as risks related to longer anaesthesia. Your surgeon should explain these in relation to your own health and the specific combination planned.
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism)
- Seroma, a collection of fluid under the abdominal skin that may need draining
- Bleeding or haematoma
- Infection and wound healing problems, particularly at the centre of the abdominal scar
- Prominent, widened or raised scars
- Changes in skin or nipple sensation
- Asymmetry or contour irregularities
- Implant-related risks where implants are used, such as capsular contracture
Mommy makeover in Istanbul: planning and cost factors
Because recovery is more demanding, a stay of around ten to fourteen days in Istanbul is commonly recommended, allowing reviews and drain removal where applicable before you fly. Travelling with a companion is strongly advisable. International patients usually begin with an online consultation and share photographs confidentially, followed by an in-person examination before surgery is confirmed. Consented before and after photographs may be reviewed during consultation, but results vary between individuals.
Depending on the surgeon and procedure, treatments may be performed at leading private hospitals in Istanbul, including LIV Hospital Vadistanbul, Memorial Bahçelievler and selected Acıbadem hospitals.
The cost of a mommy makeover in Turkey depends on the combination of procedures, the surgeon, the hospital, anaesthesia, operating time, implant choice where relevant, the length of hospital stay and accommodation during recovery. A personalised written quote follows assessment. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone.
A personalised decision
A mommy makeover can help some women feel more comfortable in their bodies after pregnancy, but it is major surgery that requires careful preparation and realistic expectations. Final results take several months to appear as swelling settles and scars mature.
Which procedures are appropriate, whether they should be combined and when to proceed are all questions for an individual assessment with a qualified plastic surgeon.
