How Long Should You Stay in Istanbul After Labiaplasty?

The usual recommendation

For labiaplasty performed on its own, many surgeons recommend staying in Istanbul for around five to seven days after surgery. This allows enough time for the initial swelling to begin settling, for a post-operative review to take place, and for you to become comfortable with wound care before travelling. Your surgeon will advise on the timing that suits your individual procedure and recovery.

If labiaplasty is combined with other procedures, such as clitoral hood reduction, perineoplasty or vaginoplasty, or with breast or body surgery, a longer stay is usually advised. The same applies if you have medical conditions that increase surgical or travel risk, or if your journey home is particularly long.

Why the first days matter

Swelling after labiaplasty tends to increase over the first two to three days before it begins to subside. This is also the period in which early complications such as bleeding, haematoma or infection are most likely to become apparent. Being close to your surgical team during this time means any concern can be examined in person and treated promptly.

The post-operative review allows the surgeon to check the wound edges, look for signs of separation or infection and confirm that healing is progressing as expected. It is also an opportunity to ask questions about hygiene, activity and the gradual return to normal routines, and to receive written aftercare instructions and contact details for remote follow-up.

A typical first week

Every recovery is different, but many women find the first week follows a broadly similar pattern. Knowing what to expect can help you plan your days in Istanbul calmly.

Plan for rest rather than sightseeing during this period. Long walks, stair climbing and prolonged sitting can increase swelling, so short, gentle outings are usually more comfortable. Keeping prescribed medication, cool packs, pads and a soft cushion close at hand makes the first days easier.

  • Day of surgery: rest at the hospital or clinic, then at your accommodation, with prescribed pain relief and cool packs as directed
  • Days 1–3: swelling and tenderness are usually most noticeable; short gentle walks are encouraged, but most of the day is spent resting
  • Days 3–5: discomfort often begins to ease; many women feel able to take short, unhurried outings
  • Days 5–7: post-operative review with the surgeon before you are cleared to fly
  • Throughout: rinse after using the toilet, wear loose cotton underwear, avoid tight clothing and keep hydrated to prevent constipation

Flying home after labiaplasty

Sitting for several hours can be uncomfortable while the tissues are swollen. Many women find an aisle seat, a soft cushion and loose clothing helpful, and standing up to walk the aisle periodically makes the journey more comfortable. Pack wound-care supplies, pain relief and sanitary pads in your hand luggage.

Any surgery followed by long-distance travel increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot in the leg. Keeping hydrated, moving regularly, performing calf exercises and wearing compression stockings if advised by your surgeon all help. If you have personal risk factors, such as a previous clot, hormonal contraception, smoking or a higher body mass index, discuss them before surgery so the team can plan appropriately.

Planning accommodation and support

Choose accommodation that is quiet, comfortable and within easy reach of the hospital or clinic. A private bathroom with a shower or handheld rinse is useful for hygiene. Travelling with a companion is not essential for labiaplasty alone, but many women appreciate the support during the first few days.

Allow some flexibility in your return flight. Most recoveries proceed as expected, but having the option to stay a day or two longer if your surgeon recommends it removes unnecessary pressure. Confirm in advance how follow-up will work once you are home, including who to contact and how to share photographs securely if you have a concern.

After you return home

Healing continues for several weeks after you leave Istanbul. Intercourse, tampons, swimming, cycling and strenuous exercise are usually avoided for around six weeks, and the final appearance is typically assessed at three to six months. Results vary between individuals.

It is sensible to let your local GP or gynaecologist know that you have had surgery abroad and to bring your operation notes. Seek prompt medical advice if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, a foul-smelling discharge, significant bleeding or the wound opening.

The right length of stay is ultimately an individual decision made with your surgeon, based on the procedure planned, your health and your travel arrangements.
