Vaginoplasty in Istanbul
Cosmetic vaginoplasty, often described as vaginal rejuvenation, is a surgical procedure that tightens the vaginal canal and the supporting muscles, most commonly after vaginal childbirth. It is distinct from gender-affirming vaginoplasty, which is a different reconstructive operation and is not offered in this context. Every decision begins with a private, confidential assessment with an experienced specialist.

What is Vaginoplasty?
Cosmetic vaginoplasty aims to narrow a vaginal canal that has become wider or more relaxed, most often after one or more vaginal births. The surgeon removes a strip of excess vaginal lining, usually from the back (posterior) wall, and brings the underlying muscles and supportive tissue closer together. It is closely related to posterior colporrhaphy, a gynaecological repair, and is often combined with perineoplasty to rebuild the vaginal opening.
It is important to distinguish this operation clearly from gender-affirming vaginoplasty, which creates a vagina as part of gender-affirming care and is not offered in this context. It is also different from non-surgical energy-based "vaginal rejuvenation". The evidence base for cosmetic vaginal surgery is still developing, and professional bodies such as ACOG and RCOG advise thorough counselling about normal anatomy, likely benefits and risks before surgery.
Who may be suitable?
- Women who have completed their family, or who understand that a later vaginal birth may affect the result
- Women experiencing a persistent sense of vaginal laxity or looseness after childbirth
- Those who have tried pelvic floor physiotherapy and still have symptoms
- Women in good general health, with no active infection and up-to-date cervical screening
- Non-smokers, or women willing to stop smoking before and after surgery
- Those with realistic expectations and a motivation that is their own, not a partner's
- Women who can avoid intercourse and strenuous activity for around 6 weeks
What can this procedure address?
- A feeling of vaginal laxity or a wide vaginal canal after childbirth
- Reduced friction or sensation during intercourse related to laxity
- Weakened support of the back vaginal wall (a mild rectocele)
- Widening of the vaginal opening, often treated together with perineoplasty
- Discomfort or self-consciousness related to changes after birth
Consultation & assessment
Your journey usually starts with a confidential online assessment. You share your medical and obstetric history, symptoms and goals, and the surgeon may review information you send privately. This allows the surgeon to explain whether vaginoplasty, pelvic floor physiotherapy, a non-surgical option or a combined approach may be appropriate, and to discuss the limits of the evidence.
Surgery is only confirmed after an in-person examination in Istanbul. The surgeon assesses vaginal tone, pelvic floor strength and any prolapse, and may arrange a cervical smear, swabs or blood tests. Your psychological wellbeing, motivations and expectations are discussed openly, and you should have time to ask questions and reflect before giving consent.
How the procedure is performed
The operation is performed through the vagina, so there are no external abdominal incisions. The surgeon marks the amount of tightening required, then removes a carefully measured section of vaginal lining, usually from the posterior wall.
The underlying muscles and fascia are then brought together with dissolvable stitches to narrow the canal and improve support. The vaginal lining is closed, again with dissolvable sutures. Over-tightening is avoided because it can cause painful intercourse.
Vaginoplasty is often combined with perineoplasty to reshape the vaginal opening and perineum, and sometimes with labiaplasty. Combining procedures may lengthen surgery and recovery, and your surgeon will discuss whether it is advisable for you.
Anaesthesia
Vaginoplasty is usually performed under general or spinal anaesthesia, although some surgeons use local anaesthesia with sedation for smaller repairs. An anaesthetist will assess you beforehand, review your medical history and explain the options. Long-acting local anaesthetic is often placed during surgery to help with comfort afterwards.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Swelling, soreness and some spotting or discharge are expected. You rest, take prescribed pain relief and walk gently to support circulation. Some women have a vaginal pack or catheter for the first night.
Week 1
Discomfort gradually eases. You avoid sitting for long periods on hard surfaces, keep the area clean as instructed and attend a check-up before flying home.
Weeks 2–3
Most women return to desk-based work and normal daily activities. Stitches continue to dissolve, and light discharge may persist.
Week 6
Many women are cleared for intercourse, tampons and more strenuous exercise after a check with their surgeon or a local gynaecologist.
3–6 months
Internal healing matures and tissues soften. Final tightness and comfort become clearer during this period.
What to expect during the first week
- Rest with your legs slightly raised and walk gently several times a day
- Use prescribed pain relief and, if advised, stool softeners to avoid straining
- Use sanitary pads, not tampons, for any bleeding or discharge
- Rinse the area gently after using the toilet and pat dry
- Avoid baths, swimming and heavy lifting
- Contact your surgeon promptly if bleeding is heavy, pain increases or you develop a fever
When can I fly?
Most women can fly home around 7–10 days after vaginoplasty, once the surgeon has examined the area. Sitting for a long flight can be uncomfortable, so a cushion may help. Surgery and travel both increase the risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), so walk the aisle regularly, keep well hydrated and wear compression stockings if your surgeon recommends them.
When can I return to work?
Many women return to desk-based work after 1–2 weeks. Jobs that involve standing for long periods, lifting or physical exertion may need 3–4 weeks or longer. Your surgeon will advise based on the extent of surgery and your healing.
When can I exercise?
Gentle walking is encouraged from the first day. Avoid cycling, running, heavy lifting, swimming and abdominal or pelvic floor-straining exercises until your surgeon confirms healing, usually around 6 weeks. Gentle pelvic floor exercises may be reintroduced earlier if your surgeon advises.
When can I have sexual intercourse?
Intercourse is typically avoided for around 6 weeks to allow the internal stitches to heal fully. Your surgeon will advise when it is safe. The first few times may feel different or tender, and a water-based lubricant can help. If discomfort persists, it should be assessed.
Scars
The incisions are inside the vagina and are not visible externally. Internal scar tissue forms as part of normal healing and usually softens over several months. Occasionally scar tissue can cause tightness or discomfort, which may need treatment.
Results
Many women report a sense of improved tightness and support once healing is complete, but the effect on sensation and sexual satisfaction is individual and cannot be predicted with certainty. Results vary between individuals. During consultation, consented before and after information may be reviewed to help explain what is realistic; these examples illustrate a range, not a promise.

How long do results last?
Results are long-lasting for many women, but they can be affected by further vaginal births, ageing, menopause-related tissue changes and pelvic floor strength. Continuing pelvic floor exercises supports the result. If you plan another pregnancy, discuss timing with your surgeon.
Potential risks and complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.
- Bleeding or haematoma requiring further treatment
- Infection of the wound or urinary tract
- Wound breakdown or delayed healing
- Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia), including from over-tightening
- Changes in sensation, which may be reduced or altered
- Internal scar tissue causing narrowing or discomfort
- Injury to the rectum or bladder, which is uncommon but serious
- Recurrence of laxity over time, particularly after further births
- Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)
- Dissatisfaction with the result or the need for revision surgery
Choosing a surgeon
- Choose a gynaecologist or plastic surgeon with specialist training and substantial experience in cosmetic and reconstructive vaginal surgery
- Confirm registration with the Turkish Medical Association and membership of relevant professional societies, and verify these credentials independently rather than relying on marketing material.
- Ask how often the surgeon performs vaginoplasty and how they decide how much tightening is appropriate
- Ask to review consented before and after information and to discuss realistic outcomes, including sensation
- Confirm the surgeon has privileges at an accredited private hospital and provides a clear written aftercare plan
Vaginoplasty in Istanbul
Most women stay in Istanbul for around 7–10 days for vaginoplasty. This allows time for the in-person consultation, surgery, initial recovery and a follow-up examination before flying home. If vaginoplasty is combined with other procedures, your surgeon may recommend a longer stay.
Women travel to Istanbul for vaginoplasty because the city has experienced gynaecologists and plastic surgeons working in modern private hospitals, with coordinated care for international patients and a discreet, private setting away from home. Depending on the surgeon and procedure, treatments may be performed at leading private hospitals in Istanbul, including LIV Hospital Vadistanbul, Memorial Bahçelievler and selected Acıbadem hospitals.
The cost of vaginoplasty in Turkey depends on the surgeon, hospital, type of anaesthesia, complexity, whether procedures such as perineoplasty or labiaplasty are combined, the length of any hospital stay and your accommodation. A personalised written quote follows your assessment. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone.

Vaginoplasty: frequently asked questions
Is cosmetic vaginoplasty different from gender-affirming vaginoplasty?
Yes. Cosmetic vaginoplasty tightens an existing vaginal canal, usually after childbirth. Gender-affirming vaginoplasty is a separate reconstructive operation and is not offered in this context.
Is vaginoplasty the same as vaginal tightening?
Surgical vaginal tightening and cosmetic vaginoplasty describe essentially the same approach of narrowing the canal and repairing supporting tissue. Non-surgical energy-based treatments are also marketed as vaginal tightening, but they work differently and have limited long-term evidence.
How long should I stay in Istanbul?
Typically 7–10 days, so your surgeon can examine you before departure. Your surgeon will advise based on your procedure and healing.
When can I fly home?
Most women fly around 7–10 days after surgery once cleared. Walk regularly during the flight, stay hydrated and wear compression stockings if advised, to reduce the risk of blood clots.
How much does vaginoplasty cost in Turkey?
Costs depend on the surgeon, hospital, anaesthesia, complexity, combined procedures, hospital stay and accommodation. You receive a personalised written quote after assessment. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone.
Will vaginoplasty improve sexual sensation?
Some women report improved sensation or satisfaction, but this is not predictable, and sensation can also be reduced. The evidence base is still developing. Results vary between individuals.
Can I see before and after results?
Consented before and after information may be reviewed privately during your consultation. Because the procedure is mostly internal, the surgeon will also explain expected changes in function. Results vary between individuals.
Should I wait until I have finished having children?
It is usually advisable, because a later vaginal birth can stretch the repaired tissues. If you plan another pregnancy, discuss this with your surgeon.
