How the procedure is performed

For a chin implant, the surgeon creates a pocket over the chin bone through a small incision under the chin or inside the lower lip and places a correctly sized implant.

For a sliding genioplasty, an incision is made inside the lower lip. The lower part of the chin bone is cut, moved to the planned position and fixed with plates and screws. The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

Anaesthesia

A chin implant may be placed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Sliding genioplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

   Swelling and tightness are common. A supportive dressing may be worn. A soft diet is recommended.

3. Weeks 2–3

   Most women return to normal routines. Numbness of the lower lip is common.

4. Week 6

   Bone healing is well advanced after genioplasty. Exercise can usually resume.

5. 3–6 months

   Swelling resolves fully and sensation continues to improve.

How long do results last?
